While delivering his remarks, Prof. Kiama noted that, ‘The University of Nairobi Channel(UNC) –with a mission to educate and entertain our audience is a powerful tool at the disposal of the University Community to help us achieve our mandate of teaching, learning, research and community service. The implementation of this broadcast station was inspired by the need for the University to enhance brand visibility for good corporate image and global competitiveness.’

The VC emphasized the core mandate of the station, ‘The station is conceptualized primarily as a media Lab for students undertaking media studies at our Department  of Journalism and Mass Communication  and other disciplines to enable them acquire and apply the right skills required by the Industry in print media, photography, film production, electronic media, performance arts and engineering. Students will have equal opportunity for attachments in the station so long as they have the competencies and relevant skills.

He affirmed, “As a research institution, the channel is going to be an important vehicle for disseminating our research outputs. The University of Nairobi is a reservoir of knowledge and quite often, we the academia have been accused rightly of keeping knowledge in the shelves. The faculty must get the knowledge out of the shelves. We must connect with the farmers in the countryside and share knowledge that will help them to improve their productivity.  We must share knowledge with communities on health, on business, on innovations, technology and on investments among other things as part of our community service.”

On his part, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o expressed his excitement at the momentous occasion and said that the University will have an opportunity for asynchronous and experiential learning, Communication to a wider audience and an immense opportunity for growth.

“We cherish your feedback, comments and criticisms. We will broadcast with dignity and cherish this brand,” urged the Chair of Department, Journalism and Mass Communication, Prof. Ndati Ndeti.
